Hernán “Snake” Vargas[1][2] is a Desert Ranger, appearing in Wasteland and Wasteland 2.

Born in 2051 on September 11th, Snake Vargas was one of the wildest, most fun-loving Rangers in the entire outfit, loving himself a good bar brawl and a scrape or two. However, he was also a capable Ranger in every aspect. He earned his nickname, Snake, for being a magnet for snakebites - and surviving them every time.[3] Another explanation is that he was so cool under pressure as to seem cold-blooded.[4]

Vargas was the team leader of Team Alpha, responsible for defeating the Cochise AI in 2087. His leadership eventually earned him the position of General, after the previous Ranger commander, Surgrue, retired. Although calmer and more easy going, Vargas proved to be a razor sharp, cold-blooded leader when needed.[4]

15 years later, in 2102, Vargas became a stiff, bearded older man wearing a hard-worn ranger uniform, and a battered old cowboy hat. General Vargas walks with a cane, but he's not helpless. After defeating Cochise, Vargas became Ranger General in charge of the Desert Rangers. He abandoned his nickname, Snake, some time after the destruction of the base, around the time of the last bar brawl he participated in, circa 2092.

Until the death of Ace in 2102, he became increasingly withdrawn, spending more time in his office than in the field. It was that event that caused him to re-evaluate his priorities and get back in the saddle once more, replacing Wade Woodson as dispatcher and guiding Ranger Team Echo through the wastelands. He doesn't fight in the field anymore, due to the fact that he has a lame leg and walks with a cane.

The revolver with numerous barrel notches and pearl grips is kept in immaculate condition, though, just in case.

Vargas is a legend among Rangers, not merely for his achievements as a field Ranger and a commander, but for his decision to sacrifice his life at the end of the confrontation with the Cochise AI in 2102: Team Echo uncovered the AI's survival and led the assault on the Citadel to destroy it before it could upload itself across Arizona. Vargas' last act as commander was to order Echo to evacuate, before detonating a nuclear warhead at the heart of the Citadel and stopping the AI forever.[4]
